FPT 2012 Design Competition

Description of Connect6

  • - Connect6 is a two-player game that we will play on a 19x19 board.
  • - Each player is referred to as light and dark, playing pieces colored accordingly.
  • - The first player to achieve a contiguous line (row, column or diagonal) of six or more of their own pieces wins the game.
  • - The game is a draw if the board is completely filled yet no player has won.

Schedule of competition
  • - Design Verification
    • Dec.10, 2012, 1-3 pm at Sooryon (Water Lily) Hall
  • - Preliminary matches to select the semi-finalists.
    • Dec.10, 2012, 18 – 20 pm at Mugungwha Hall
  • - The semi-final and final matches
    • Dec. 12, 2012, 11:40 am – 12:20 pm at Mugungwha Hall

FPT 2012 Design Competition Rules

 - Connect6 -

  • - Connect6 is a two-player game that we will play on a 19x19 board.
  • - Each player is referred to as light and dark, playing pieces colored accordingly.
  • - The first player to achieve a contiguous line (row, column or diagonal) of six or more of their own pieces wins the game.
  • - The game is a draw if the board is completely filled yet no player has won.
Playing the Game:
  • - The “referee_adv” (see “Host Program” below) lays down ONE piece of dark on empty intersection in the 9x9 center area of the board randomly, and the game starts.
  • - Light plays next and lays down TWO pieces on any empty intersections of the board.
  • - Dark then plays again and lays down TWO pieces on any empty intersections of the board.
  • - Light and dark continue to alternate, each playing two pieces on a turn on empty intersections of the board.
  • Note: it is only in referee_adv's first turn that a single piece is played.  In all other turns two pieces are played by each player.
  • - Each match consists of two games. Each player starts with dark alternatively. The starting points are determined randomly in the 9x9 center region for each match. However, the starting points for both games are the same.
  • - If the results of the games are even, the player who wins a game with less turns wins the match. For example, player A wins the first game at 9 turns, and player B wins the second game at 11 turns. The results of the games are 1:1, but the winner of the match is the player A.
Rules of Connect6 player
  • - Your design must be capable of playing either the dark or light pieces.
  • Your design must choose its moves using FPGA hardware and not an embedded processor.  An embedded processor may be used in your design, but only for interfacing.  That is, you may not implement your design entirely as a software program that runs on an FPGA embedded processor.
  • - There is no limitation in using FPGA boards as long as only one FPGA is used. However, the player using an FPGA with less performance and capacity will win the match if the results of the games are even with the same turns.
Schedule and Rules of competition
  • - Design Verification
    • Dec.10, 2012, 1-3 pm at Sooryon (Water Lily) Hall
    • The FPGA design will play with “Referee_adv” and it should win the “Referee_adv”.
  • - Preliminary matches to select the semi-finalists.
    • Dec.10, 2012, 18 – 20 pm at Mugungwha Hall
    • The preliminary matches will be played by the league.
    • The top 4 teams will proceed to the semi-finals. If the participants are too many, there will be two leagues.
    • There will be a drawing to divide the participants to two leagues during the verification of design if there are two leagues.
    • The semi-finalists are determined according to the following orders:
1. Larger number of matches the player wins
2. Larger number of games the player wins if the number of matches is the same
3a. The winner of a match wins if the numbers of won games are the same for two players.
3b. Less number of turns when the player wins the game if the numbers of won games are the same for three or more players.
4. The player with lower performance FPGA wins. For example, Xilinx Spartan family wins the Xilinx Virtex family. The decision will be made by referees of the design competition.
    • If there are two leagues, the first ranked players of each league will go to the semi-finals directly. The second ranked players of a league will play with the third ranked players of the other league, and the winners will go to the semi-finals as the second ranked player of each league.
    •
  • - The semi-final and final matches
    • Dec. 12, 2012, 11:40 am – 12:20 pm at Mugungwha Hall
    • Semi-finals
      • One league preliminary match:
        • Match 1: first ranked player vs. fourth ranked player
        • Match 2: second ranked player vs. third ranked player
      • Two league preliminary match:
        • Match 1: first ranked player of league A vs. second ranked player of league B
        • Match 2: first ranked player of league B vs. second ranked player of league A
      • The player wins a match if
1. it wins both games
2. it wins a game with less turns
3. it has lower performance FPGA. The decision will be made by referees of the design competition.
    • Final match
      • The player wins a match if
1. it wins both games
2. it wins a game with less turns
      • If the numbers of turns are the same, there will be another match. If the second match is still a draw, the finalists share the gold prize.

Approved Boards

There is no limitation in using FPGA boards as long as they can communication with the host program and only one FPGA is used.
